Linking your ADSL Modem to a Linksys router

For newbies wanting to link your ADSL modem with your Linksys router (Here WRT54G), the steps are as follows:-

1. First connect only the modem to the computer and access the following page http://192.168.1.1. Enter the credentials to access the device info page.

2. Note down the default gateway and static DNS IPs as per the screenshots given below:-

3. Here the start IP address is the local internet IP address for your connection (To be used later within the router configuration).

4. Now disconnect the modem and connect only the router to the computer. If you have not changed the local ip of the router, you can access it using the same url namely http://192.168.1.1 else you would have to use the configured ip.

5. In case the router page is not accessible through either of the urls, then you have no choice but to restore the factory settings of the router. On the backside of the router you will notice a small reset button at the left. With the router powered on, press it for about 5 seconds. This will restore the factory settings on the router.

6. First thing you need to do is to change the local ip of the router so that it does not conflict with modem ip. On the basic setup page, give the following local ip 192.168.2.1. Next change the admin password from the management page.

7. Now configure the router to talk to the modem by using the settings from the modem taken in step 2.

8. On the internet setup section under the basic setup, select “Static IP” from the drop-down.

9. For the internet IP address you can set it as 192.168.1.2.

10. For the static DNS IPs, fill as per the first screenshot namely “Primary DNS Server”, “Secondary DNS server”.

11. The subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0

12. The default gateway would be the modem’s local IP which is 192.168.1.1. This is because the modem serves as the gateway to the internet for the router.

13. Next setup the wireless security using the WPA Personal key. You can personalize the SSID name and enable the broadcast of the same.

14. Finally setup the wireless MAC ID filter by enabling the same and adding the MAC IDs of only select devices that need to connect (Laptop, Desktop, iPhone, 3G phones, PS 3 etc.) to the MAC ID filter list. After you save the list, you may have to restart the router in order for connections to be successful for all added devices.

15. Now connect the router to the modem and the modem to the phone line and power it on. You should now be able to connect your wireless devices to the router and the internet if you have entered the WPA key correctly and device MAC IDs are entered correctly on the router.
